Fun in Japan

Congratulations to Fun.! They have a second #1 hit, “Some Nights” and it is a great song! Not as great, in my opinion, as “Carry On” but it’s decent enough. (So, I asked my sister, “Should I start this post with anything more fun?” But then I just started laughing. Involuntary pun!)

Is anyone surprised that Florence + the Machine has more followers than Fun. and Gotye? Combined? Ok, not combined, but it gets pretty dang close. I feel like I hear both Fun. and Gotye on the radio way more than Flo + Ma (is that a good nickname? It looks horrible.)

So the band that I’m featuring today is an up and coming band (according to some source that no one should try to verify) that has a few really great songs! And this is one of them:

The House That Heaven Built (link), by Japandroids

The Canadian, this is for you! These guys are from your homeland.

I love this song because it’s a little bit rock-n-roll and I love that little O-o-o-o-o-o-o-oh that they do. Oh yeah, I just did that. But this song definitely sings to the rock side of my heart. As opposed to the granite side . . .

Also, I just looked up the lyrics because it’s a tad bit hard to understand them, and they’re pretty great! My eccentric english teacher used to play us random songs that were all really old because they had good poetry, but they were just so outdated. I should send this song to him . . . ha, yeah, I’ll do that later. NOT! I’m bringin’ that back.

So take a listen, like them on facebook, show ’em some love!

I can’t think of a title . . .

If you like scary movies, do yourself a favor and watch the mini-series “Harper’s Island.” Terrifying and hauntingly satisfying. There are so many characters in that show that I love way more than I thought from the first episode! Darn you The Canadian for introducing me to that show!

Also, remember that great time that is so far gone when no one knew Fun.? And then they came out with “We Are Young” and suddenly everyone knew who they were. I mean, I went to their concert a couple years ago. And it was free! That’s how unknown they were. Just kidding, it was some kind of student concert at ASU and there was also Motion City Soundtrack, so it’s not like they couldn’t have made people pay for that. Anyways, I’ve been listening to their new album today, and I just keep thinking of a little kid with a new toy and he just uses it to death. That new toy is autotune. Why, fun., why? But in the song “Stars” I actually like it, I think because it’s so stylized.

So instead of doing a featured artist, I’m going to tell you what I’ve bought music-wise lately. Oh yeah, insight into my life. What music will I spend money on? Well, a small amount of money. I will only buy it if it’s a 99 cent album or a 25 cent song. So! In the spirit of college income (0$) here is what I’ve bought all this year:

25 cent songs:

Too Close, by Alex Clare

Tongue Tied, by Grouplove (one of my favorite songs right now)

It’s Time, by Imagine Dragons

Good Time, by Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen (I’ll admit, this was mostly curiosity. I mean, that’s worth 25 cents right? Plus, it’s so catchy. Darn this song!)

Enter Sandman, by Metallica (I can’t believe I didn’t have this in my music library before now. I mean, a person has to have at least one Metallica song.)

Swimming in the Flood, by Passion Pit (One of my faves by them. Plus I had a 2$ credit with Amazon.)

Boomerang, by Miniature Tigers (I’ve talked about this before. My first post, actually. Good times.)

99 cent albums:

Some Nights, by Fun.

Katy Perry (Don’t judge me.)

Making Mirrors, by Gotye (Someone That I Used to Know is not their only good song. In fact, it’s not even their best song.)

Love is a Four Letter Word, by Jason Mraz

El Camino, by the Black Keys

My Head Is An Animal, by Of Monsters and Men

Ceremonials, by Florence + the Machine (One of the greatest female vocalists of our generation)

What We Saw From the Cheap Seats, by Regina Spektor (Another of the greatest vocalists of our generation)

Lights, by Ellie Goulding (My girl crush)

I also got a ton of free albums and songs because sometimes Amazon just rocks! But I’m not going to list those, because there’s like a billion. Also, every time I write Amazon I always want to put a ‘g’ at the end. There is no such thing as Amazong. If there was, it would be a verb.

But there it is. All my music purchases. Actually, that’s not true, I got an iTunes gift certificate for Christmas. Dang it! Maybe later.
